RésuméLe parcours historique des collections ethnographiques irlandaises, historiquement les plus importantes, est inextricablement lié au passé colonialiste et post-colonialiste de l’Irlande. L’île occupe à cet égard une position tout à fait singulière. À une certaine époque, elle abrita en effet la seconde ville de l’Empire britannique, tout en figurant parmi les pays qui souffrirent le plus des effets catastrophiques de l’administration coloniale. L’histoire récente dans le domaine des musées et du patrimoine est elle aussi inhabituelle : de superbes collections ethnographiques et folkloriques sont restées enfermées pendant des décennies. Or, ces objets témoignent de l’idée que l’Irlande se fait d’elle-même et de sa position dans l’histoire. Cet article présente ce patrimoine ethnographique dont la signification anthropologique est examinée en appliquant le concept d’« objets en attente ».

The historical trajectory of the most historically significant ethnographic collections in Ireland intertwine with histories of colonialism and post-colonialism, and Ireland’s position with regard to this narrative is unique. Ireland was at one time the location of the second city of the British Empire, and also one of the places which suffered most catastrophically from colonial era administration. Secondly, the recent history of the museum and heritage sector is also unusual, with the prime ethnographic and folkloric material being kept in storage for decades. These objects are indices of Ireland’s self-conception as existing within an historical flow. We aim to provide an introduction to Ireland’s distinctive material ethnographic heritage, and consider its significance for anthropological learning through the concept of “objects in waiting”.

ZusammenfassungDer geschichtliche Werdegang der historisch sehr bedeutenden ethnographischen Sammlungen Irlands ist untrennbar mit der kolonialen und post-kolonialen Vergangenheit Irlands verbunden. In dieser Hinsicht nimmt Irland eine einzigartige Stellung ein. Besonders weil sich in Irland früher die zweitwichtigste Stadt des britischen Empires befand – und dass, trotzdem Irland eines derjenigen Länder war, das am meisten unter den Auswirkungen der britischen Kolonialverwaltung gelitten hat. Aber auch die aktuelle Situation der Heimatmuseen außergewöhnlich : Denn in ihnen wurden wunderbare ethnographische und folkloristische Sammlungen jahrzehntelang unter Verschluss gehalten. Objekte die davon zeugen wie Irland sich selbst und seine eigene Geschichte wahrnimmt. Der vorliegende Artikel widmet sich diesem ethnographischen Erbe und untersucht seine anthropologische Bedeutung unter Anwendung des Konzepts der „ objets en attente“ – der „zu erwartenden Objekte“.
