À l’occasion de la mise au point de la loi de 2001 sur l’archéologie préventive, l’auteur examine le cas des grands travaux d’archéologie linéaire et de faible largeur, présente les options méthodologiques possibles (tout fouiller, fouiller pour repérer, fouiller pour comprendre) et réfléchit sur les finalités de l’archéologie préventive appliquée aux grands travaux pour les aménageurs, pour l’INRAP, pour la connaissance en général.

On the occasion of the updating of the 2001 act on preventative archaology, the author of this paper looks at the case of major linear archaeology works of narrow breadth, introduces the various methodological options (excavate everything, excavate to spot, excavate to understand) and develops a reflexion on the purposes of preventative archaeology applied to major engineering works, aimed at the developers, the INRAP and vith a view to developing knowledge in general.
