L’histoire du luthéranisme aux Pays-Bas est étroitement liée à l’afflux migratoire des xvie et xviie siècles et le développement économique de la période. Contrairement aux pays allemands de l’Empire et aux royaumes de Danemark, duquel la Norvège fit partie, et de la Suède où le luthéranisme fut introduit et protégé par les pouvoirs politiques et put ainsi devenir une confession dominante, le luthéranisme resta toujours aux Pays-Bas une tradition religieuse minoritaire. Les congrégations néerlandaises luthériennes durent s’établir et s’affirmer face à l’Église Réformée publique et dominante et parmi les autres minorités religieuses.

The beginnings of Lutheranism in the Low Countries : challenges of a religious minorityThe history of Dutch Lutheranism is closely related to the migration streams of the 16th and 17th century and the economic development in the Low Countries in that period. Contrary to the German Lands and the Scandinavian kingdoms of Denmark, to which Norway belonged at the time, and Sweden where Lutheranism was introduced and protected by the rulers and could thus become a dominant confession, Lutheranism in the Low Countries had always remained a religious minority tradition without the support or protection of a Lutheran authority. Dutch Lutheran congregations had to establish themselves opposite the dominant, public Reformed Church and amidst other religious minorities.
