This paper aims to present the semiotic plasticity of the fox in Chinese stories. This contribution is based on the semiotic approaches of the Paris School to classify the metamorphosed fox in Pu Songling’s writings, and the story "The Spinner" was chosen for a detailed study, describing the bodily plasticity of the fox in tactile, visual and olfactory sensory fields. This study analyses the process of significance of the fox woman and the gendered difference of language in the Chinese story through Houdebine’s semiology of indice. It also explains the creation of the fox woman from the perspective of the cultural imaginary, then finally contrasts the Chinese story with Kafka’s "The Metamorphosis".Keywords: metamorphosed fox, Pu Songling, semiology of indices, cultural imaginary, Franz Kafka.
