Cet article porte sur le débat universitaire et théorique sur la fin de l’Empire britannique dans le Moyen-Orient. À travers l’étude de l’ Orientalisme d’Edward W. Said, des controverses qu’il suscita notamment auprès des historiens diplomatiques, et de l’impact qu’il eut sur l’étude de la diplomatie britannique post-1945 au Moyen-Orient, l’auteur s’attache à expliquer, à travers l’exemple d’Aden, les causes de l’échec de la politique britannique dans la région.

Orientalism and the Failure of British Policy in the Middle East: The Case of AdenThis article focuses on the academic and theoretical debate about the end of the British Empire in the Middle East. Through the study of Orientalism of Said, of controversy that it aroused among diplomatic historians, and of the impact it had on the study of post-45 British diplomacy in the Middle East, the author seeks to explain, through the example of Aden, the causes of the failure of British policy in the region.
