RésuméArchétype matriciel ayant permis l’affirmation du mythe de l’Homme providentiel moderne, le souvenir de Jeanne d’Arc connaît toutefois une nette désaffection depuis les années 1970. Comment expliquer cette baisse de ferveur et d’intensité tant populaire que politique ? Si de nombreux arguments sont traditionnellement avancés, comme l’appropriation du mythe par le Front national ou l’apathie du patriotisme républicain à son égard, il est néanmoins possible d’avancer une ultime hypothèse. Ainsi, le déclin du culte de Jeanne d’Arc serait symptomatique d’une certaine érosion du mythe du sauveur. Une érosion communément admise par la science historique et vraisemblablement concomitante à cette période d’éclipse johannique. Dès lors, n’y a-t-il plus aucun espoir de voir ressurgir Jeanne d’Arc et, à travers elle, l’homme providentiel ? A-t-il, au final, réellement disparu de notre paysage national et de notre imaginaire collectif ? De la Révolution à nos jours, regards sur les mutations successives d’un incontournable usage politique.

Motherly archetype asserting the modern myth of the « Providential Man », the memory of Joan of Arc has however undergone a clear disaffection since the 70s. How to explain this decreasing fervour and declining intensity both popular and political? If various arguments have been put forward to explain it such as the appropriation of the myth by the French National Front or the apathy towards it from republican patriotism, yet it is possible to put forward a final theory. Thus, the decline in Joan of Arc’s cult could be symptomatic of a certain wearing of the myth of the Saviour. A wearing commonly admitted by historical sciences and possibly concurrent with this period of decreasing johannic interest. Is there indeed no hope of a revival of Joan of Arc and through her, a revival of the Providential Man? Has he completely disappeared from our national landscape and our popular imagination? From the French Revolution till today, visions of the successive mutations of a key political use.
