Contemporary archaeology and above all archaeology of Second World War is still a young matter in the case of ex-Poitou-Charentes region in spite of the many remains of the Atlantic Wall. Two archaeological sites represent the beginning of this archaeology in a preventive context in Charente-Maritime : Vaux-sur-Mer and Châtelaillon-Plage. Those two sites, exacavated five years apart between 2014 and 2019, have revealed structures linked to the Royan pocket and the La Rochelle pocket (trenches, shelters, foxholes, artillery position…), which needed an adaptation of the research aims to enable the study of these contemporary remains.

L’archéologie contemporaine et plus particulièrement des vestiges liés à la Seconde Guerre mondiale représente une discipline encore très jeune dans la région ex-Poitou-Charentes malgré les nombreux restes liés à la mise en place du mur de l’Atlantique. Deux sites archéologiques représentent les débuts de cette discipline en contexte préventif en Charente-Maritime : Vaux-sur-Mer et Châtelaillon-Plage. Ces deux occupations, fouillées à cinq ans d’intervalle entre 2014 et 2019 ont vu la découverte de structures liées aux poches de Royan et La Rochelle (tranchées, abris, trous d’homme, position d’artillerie…), justifiant une adaptation des objectifs scientifiques pour permettre un traitement archéologique de ces vestiges contemporains.
