Introduction: General practice internships during postgraduate training may influence physicians’ practice location, yet the geographical extent of this effect is unclear. Objective: To evaluate the territorial attractiveness of general practice internships. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of students enrolled in the postgraduate general practice program between 2012 and 2020 who subsequently established private practices. Practice locations were analyzed at the training site, municipality, life-health territory (TVS, territoire de vie-santé), and canton levels, and were compared with general practice internship locations. Results: A cohort of 1,625 former students having established private practices was identified. Among them, 131 (8.1%) settled in the same training site, 217 (13.4%) in the same municipality, 219 (13.5%) in the same TVS, and 239 (14.7%) in the same canton. Notably, 476 (29.3%) established their practice outside the Île-de-France region. Most settlements were located at the site of a level 2 (50.7%) or a level 1 internship (43.8%). Conclusions: General practice internships primarily influence settlement at the municipal level, with limited effect beyond. The modest local settlement rate indicates training sites also attract physicians who did not complete their internship locally. Further studies are warranted.
