« Illustration » ne saurait désigner simplement une image, ni même une image dans un livre, comme le voudrait l’acception du terme qui n’apparut en français qu’en 1825 alors que le phénomène éditorial était déjà massif au xviiie siècle. L’article revient d’abord sur l’émergence de cette acception. Il redéfinit ensuite la « relation illustrative » sur la base de cinq critères problématiques, comme un phénomène qui ne n’est pas spécifiquement littéraire, pas exclusivement livresque, pas absolument chronologique, pas strictement nécessaire, pas systématiquement légitime. Il explore enfin les indices matériels de cette relation souvent tacite dans le cas très spécifique du livre littéraire « avec figures » au xviiie siècle.

“Illustration” should not simply refer to a picture or even to a picture in a book. Such a meaning did not appear in French until 1825, although the editorial practice was already massive in the 18th century. The paper first focuses on the beginnings of this meaning. It then redefines the “illustrative relationship” with five problematic criteria: the literary domain, the bookish medium, the chronology, the material access, the artistic legitimation. Finally, it explores the material clues to this often tacit relationship in the very specific case of the literary book “with figures” in the 18th century.
