La revue Solaria (Florence, 1926-1936), ouverte aux nouveautés européennes et perçue comme en rupture par rapport au passé, apparaît tributaire de la tradition humaniste et moraliste de la critique italienne. L’idée d’une liaison entre destructuration de la forme et dislocation du personnage associée à la mise en pièces de la notion de personnalité demeure étrangère aux préoccupations de la plupart des « Solariani », alors que le jugement moral, l’attention à l’homme, au contenu, reviennent en force. L’approche européenne de Solaria porte les derniers fruits de la réaction à l’essentialisme inspiré par Benedetto Croce et ancre pour longtemps dans la critique italienne une méfiance à l’égard des technicismes et psychologismes romanesques ressentis comme menaçants pour un art qui, dans l’esprit des « Solariani », devait « repart[ir] du cœur humain ».

The revue Solaria (Florence, 1926-1936), open to European innovation and seen as breaking with the past, in fact seems to be something of a tributary of the humanist and moralising tradition of Italian criticism. The idea of a relationship between the destructuring of form and the dislocation of character associated with the undoing of the notion of the the individual remains foreign to the preoccupations of most of the “Solariani”, while moral judgement, a focus on mankind and on content, remains a major element. The European approach of Solaria was the last rallying cry of the reaction to the essentialism inspired by Benedetto Croce, and for a long time it helped maintain in Italian criticism a distrust for technicism and psychologism in the novel, which it considered threatening to an art that, in the minds of the “Solariani”, was supposed to “begin with the human heart.”
