La tentative d’assassinat de Jean sans Peur en 1408, demeurée inconnue jusqu’à ce jour, fut effectuée en représailles au meurtre de son rival Louis d’Orléans à Paris l’année précédente. Le tueur à gages, un Flamand, fut capturé et confié aux soins particuliers de Jean Le Chien, bailli et châtelain de Beveren, en qui le duc de Bourgogne avait entière confiance. L’agresseur fut donc exécuté au château de Beveren. Ainsi les effets de la guerre entre Armagnacs et Bourguignons se firent sentir jusqu’à Beveren, une seigneurie située à la frontière nord-est du comté de Flandre.

The attempted assassination of John the Fearless in 1408, unknown to this day, was a retaliation for the murder of his rival Louis of Orléans in Paris the previous year. The hired killer, a Fleming, was captured and entrusted to the special care of Jean Le Chien, bailiff and steward of Beveren, in whom the duke of Burgundy placed deep confidence. The agressor was therefore executed at the castle of Beveren. Thus the effects of the war between Armagnacs and Burgundians were felt as far as Beveren, a seigneury located on the northeast border of the county of Flanders.
