RésuméÀ côté de la splendeur de sa cour et de ses armées, les campagnes militaires menées par Charles le Téméraire apparaissent comme des éléments sombres dans l’histoire des ducs Valois de Bourgogne. Les différentes sources (littéraires, judiciaires, normatives et comptables) s’accordent pour dénoncer les dévastations, le pillage et les exactions. Il fallait donc les confronter pour saisir les mécanismes propres aux violences de guerre.Dans cet article, on observe avec soin le pillage des villes et en particulier l’application du droit de butin. On s’interroge dans ce cadre, sur le rôle de la noblesse durant les opérations. Il est question ensuite d’analyser l’importance de la menace du logement qui pesait sur les communautés. Cette question nous amène à étudier la promiscuité entre gens de guerre et populations rencontrées « sur les champs ». Enfin, on tente de démontrer que certaines opérations répondaient à des objectifs stratégiques qui visaient directement la destruction d’un ennemi par le biais de ses infrastructures et même de sa population. Ceci nous conduisant, dans un dernier point, à traiter le cas des violences sexuelles en temps de guerre.

Looting and Violence in the Military Campaigns of Charles the Bold (1466-1476)Next to the splendour of his court and his armies, the military campaigns led by Charles the Bold assume the appearance of darker elements in the history of the Valois dukes of Burgundy. The various sources (literary, judiciary, normative and accounting) concur to denounce the devastations, the looting and the exactions. They were then to be confronted to one another in order to understand the proper mechanisms of war violence.In this paper, the looting of cities and particularly the implementation of the right of plunder, are carefully observed. Within this framework, the role of nobility during these operations is questioned. This leads to an analysis of the importance of the threat of lodging that weighed on the communities. This issue opens on the study of the promiscuity between the troop and the populations they met « on the field ». Finally, there is an attempt at demonstrating how certain operations responded to the strategic objectives of directly destroying the enemy through the destruction of their infrastructures and even of their population. This, in turn, brings us to finally deal with the case of sexual abuse in times of war.
