Theodor Fritsch, author of the infamous Handbuch der Judenfrage ( The Handbook of the Jewish Question), is a name that often comes up in studies on anti-Semitism. Yet Hitler’s letter dated November 28, 1930, shows that the field’s research must be pursued further still on the different aspects of his long years as a radical anti-Semite. In it, Hitler confirms that he thoroughly studied Fritsch’s book during his years in Vienna and recognizes the central role that Fritsch played in the creation of Nazi anti-Semitism. This raises the question : Could Fritsch be viewed as Hitler’s guru ? What follows is a reconstruction of the history of the relationship between Hitler and Fritsch, from the sharp contrasts that brought them into conflict in the 1920s, as demonstrated by the criticism found in Mein Kampf, to the reconciliation of the 1930s.
