Ouvrage monumental réalisé à la suite de l’Expédition de Bonaparte en Égypte, la Description de l’Égypte est publiée dans le premier quart du xixe siècle, sur une vingtaine d’années, et suscite un large engouement. Les municipalités des principales villes du Nord et du Pas-de-Calais souhaitent enrichir leur bibliothèque de l’imposant ouvrage et, plutôt que d’en faire la coûteuse acquisition, se livrent à une concurrence acharnée afin de l’obtenir gracieusement. Cette émulation est aussi à mettre en relation avec l’intérêt pour l’Égypte ancienne, stimulée par la redécouverte du système hiéroglyphique par Champollion en 1822.

Town councils of the main cities in the French departements of Nord and Pas-de-Calais wanted to expand their libraries with this series, and instead of buying it, were in competition to get it free of charge. This emulation is also to connect with the interest for Ancient Egypt, boosted by Champollion’s rediscovery of the hieroglyphic system in 1822.
