Thomas Stearns Eliot est le poète et critique américain qui a parlé au début du XXe siècle d’une « méthode mythique » pour décrire la tâche des meilleurs écrivains de l’époque moderniste, qui commence après la guerre de 1914-1918. On étudie ici les caractéristiques de cette méthode telles qu’elles apparaissent dans son grand poème : La Terre gaste. On s’intéresse ensuite à la façon dont le romancier américain Thomas Clayton Wolfe utilise l’élément mythique afin d’écrire une seule et vaste épopée pour les temps de détresse que l’après-guerre a ouverts.

Thomas Stearns Eliot is the American poet and critic who wrote of a “mythical method” at the beginning of the twentieth century to describe the task of the best writers of the modernist period, which starts after World War I. The characteristics of this method are briefly studied here as they appear in his long poem entitled The Waste Land. Then the article studies the way the American novelist Thomas Clayton Wolfe used the mythic element in order to write a single and long epic work that might prove useful in times of post-war distress.
