Throbbing to the Beat of the Unconscious This article takes as its starting point the role played by rhythm and beat in psychic processes as described by Freud and goes on to explore their meta-psychological and clinical dimensions. Research in other areas of auditory perception has shed new light on the theoretical perspectives of psychoanalysis, underlining the importance of tempo, of a regular beat, in the construction of sound pictures. The key role of this internal beat in the construction by newborn babies of spaces, be they psychic, temporal or auditory, is discussed.
