Un important programme de travaux dans le cœur de Bagacum, Bavay antique, a pour objectif principal la construction d’une toiture destinée à protéger les vestiges des cryptoportiques de l’aire sacrée du forum et d’une partie des murailles du Bas-Empire. Au préalable, en 2020, une opération archéologique a permis de dégager de nouveaux éléments antiques, et d’étudier des blocs situés sur l’aire ouverte du forum. L’un d’eux, en pierre bleue, une fois retourné, a livré le texte d’une épitaphe inédite. Cette inscription nous apprend le nom de deux Nerviens ayant vécu à la charnière des iie et iiie s., qui nous révèle un couple multiculturel.

A major work program at Bagacum, ancient Bavay, in advance of the erection of a roof to protect the remains of the sacred cryptoporticus area of the forum and part of the late Roman walls, has resulted in a particularly interesting discovery. In 2020, as a precursor to this construction, an archaeological operation revealed new evidence, and facilitated the study of stone blocks located in the open forum area. One of these, in blue stone, when turned over, revealed the text of a previously unpublished epitaph. This inscription gives the names of two Nervians who lived at the turn of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD ; they were a multi-cultural couple.
