Cet article cherche à mettre en lumière les facteurs explicatifs du changement d’orientation d’un thomisme classique à la théologie herméneutique du théologien dominicain français Claude Geffré. Il commence par présenter les grandes lignes de son enseignement dogmatique à l’école de Thomas d’Aquin. Puis il esquisse trois facteurs explicatifs : sa critique de la théologie métaphysique thomiste ; l’influence de Vatican II (surtout Dei Verbum) et son enseignement en théologie fondamentale à la suite de Henri Bouillard à l’Institut catholique de Paris. Vient ensuite un aperçu des grandes articulations de sa théologie herméneutique. En guise de conclusion, ce déplacement chez Geffré est situé dans la continuité du sens de l’historicité de la foi de Marie-Dominique Chenu.

This article seeks to shed light on factors that would explain the change of orientation by the French Dominican Claude Geffré from classic Thomism to hermeneutical theology. First are presented the major thrusts of his teaching of Dogmatics at the school of Thomas Aquinas. Three explanatory factors are then sketched: his critique of Thomist metaphysical theology; the influence of the Second Vatican Council (especially Dei Verbum); his teaching of Fundamental Theology in the steps of Henri Bouillard at the Institut Catholique de Paris. There follows a look at the major points of his hermeneutical theology. In conclusion, Geffré’s shift is situated within continuity with Marie-Dominique Chenu’s sense of the historicity of faith.
