La croix rouvre en permanence dans l’histoire le procès fait à Jésus en son temps. Le Messie crucifié est au cœur de la tradition chrétienne un aiguillon et une mémoire dangereuse pour tous les pouvoirs.

If the christologization of the death of Jesus is a long process in the New Testament, it is because this death introduces a stumbling block, what St. Paul calls the scandal of the cross. The Christian tradition that is founded upon this scandal bears within itself its own means of self-criticism and its prophetic power, as the French theologian Joseph Moingt SJ has shown. The cross constantly reopens over the course of history the trial Jesus stood in his own time. The crucified Messiah constitutes at the heart of Christian tradition both a goad and a dangerous memory for all forms of power.
