This article examines the clinical research conducted in the United States from the 1990 s onwards that led to the inclusion of complex post-traumatic stress disorder in the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases. It reviews key concepts such as complex trauma, Type I and Type II trauma in children, developmental trauma disorder, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder, highlighting their implications for child and adolescent psychiatry. Ultimately, the notion of complex trauma in children appears more as an oversimplification than as an application of genuine “complex thinking”.

Cet article présente les travaux cliniques états-uniens à partir des années 1990 ayant conduit à la création du trouble de stress post-traumatique complexe dans la onzième édition de la Classification internationale des maladies. Il passe entre autres en revue les notions de complex trauma, de trauma de type I et II chez l’enfant, de developmental trauma disorder, et de complex post traumatic stress disorder, en en soulignant les implications pédopsychiatriques. Finalement, la notion de trauma complexe chez l’enfant apparaît plus comme une simplification excessive que comme la mobilisation d’une véritable « pensée complexe ».
