Ageing in the Swiss mountains: the social interactions and local affiliations of elderly women “from around here”

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2024. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article studies the social interactions and local affiliations of women of advanced age in mountain territories. To what extent do these women benefit from a “nativeness capital” that they can harness to keep living at home in mountain villages? Taking a comprehensive sociological approach, the article draws on the data produced as part of a qualitative survey carried out with people aged 80 and over living in the Alpine valleys of the Valais canton in French-speaking Switzerland. In keeping with recent research on gender and rurality, the analysis sheds light in a retrospective manner on the components that structure the sedentary trajectories of women by showing what ties them to the local space. The study then examines the symbolic struggles relating to nativeness and their impact on the local social interactions of elderly women. We conclude by analysing local family resources as a central component of nativeness capital and a determining factor in the possibility of continuing to live at home. The article provides an original viewpoint of contemporary forms of social interaction in advanced age in a mountain environment.
