The involvement of domestic animals in work is a topic that has been largely unexplored by both the natural sciences and the social sciences. Yet, since the earliest days of domestication and continuing to this day, animals have played a massive role, all over the world, in the production of wealth and material and immaterial goods. To understand what animals do in work and what it means for an animal to work, we have proposed the concept of animal labor, based on the psychodynamics of work. Here, we highlight the scientific, social, societal, and food-related issues involved in conceptualizing animal labor and, more broadly, in developing a sociology of animal labor, which is essential for thinking about the future of our domestic relationships with animals.

L’engagement des animaux domestiques dans le travail est un sujet inexploré autant par les sciences de la nature que par les sciences sociales. Pourtant, depuis les premières domestications et encore aujourd’hui, les animaux participent massivement, partout dans le monde, à la production de richesses, de biens matériels et immatériels. Pour comprendre ce que les animaux font dans le travail et ce que signifie travailler pour un animal, nous avons proposé, à l’appui de la psychodynamique du travail, un concept de travail animal. Nous mettons en évidence ici les enjeux scientifiques, sociaux, sociétaux et alimentaires d’une conceptualisation du travail animal et plus largement d’une sociologie du travail animal indispensable pour penser l’avenir de nos relations domestiques avec les animaux.
