Le poème Liberté, de Paul Eluard, parachuté par la Royal Air Force en avril 1943, devient très vite le symbole de la résistance à l'occupation nazie. Eluard entérine cette sacralisation et insiste sur l'importance du mot et du nom “liberté” dans la genèse de son poème. Pourtant, des témoignages offrent une autre légende de fondation : le poème a été écrit pour une femme aimée, Nush, et l'idée de liberté ne serait qu'un après coup, répondant à la réception du poème. Nous analysons ici les mécanismes discursifs de cette légende et en recherchons les traces dans le brouillon du poème. Si les conclusions auxquelles nous parvenons ne permettent pas de distinguer la légende de l'intention initiale du poète (ce que Benveniste appelle l'“intenté”), si elles ne parviennent pas à départir le féminin de l'idée de liberté, elles offrent une leçon d'humilité : le texte – jusque dans les traces de sa genèse – garde heureusement le mystère de sa création.

On Paul Éluard's poem Liberté Parachuted by the Royal Air Force in April 1943, Paul Éluard's poem Liberté quickly became the symbol of the Resistance to Nazi occupation. Eluard confirmed this sanctification and insisted on the importance of the word and the name “liberté” in the genesis of his poem. Yet, witnesses of how the poem came into being have suggested a different founding myth: the poem may have been written for a beloved woman, Nush, the idea of liberty coming only later, in answer to the public's favorable response. We have retraced the mechanisms of the legend across the first rough draft of the poem. Though our conclusions hardly permit us to separate the legend from the poet's initial intention (what Benveniste called the “intended”), nor to isolate the feminine component in the idea of liberty, they do offer us a lesson in humility: the text – even in the traces of its beginnings – fortunately preserves the mystery of creation.
