La francophonie chinoise, en l’espace de deux décennies, accède à une visibilité accrue grâce à son succès médiatique et à sa reconnaissance institutionnelle. Elle appelle à des investigations sur son passé quelque peu occulté par l’histoire. Tcheng Ki-tong (Chen Jitong1852-1907), diplomate et lettré de la fin d la Dynastie des Qing, est à ce titre une figure emblématique : il illustre par ses écrits et par sa production diverse une rhétorique ambiguë qui oscille entre la mythification de la Chine et une utopie universaliste exclusive des rapports de force. Les enseignements dont on pourra tirer de sa posture singulière permettront de mieux appréhender les enjeux d’aujourd’hui pour ce champ d’étude en constant renouvellement.

For an archaeology of the Chinese French-speaking Literature: the case of Tcheng Ki-tong, RLC LXXXV, no. 3, july-sept. 2011, p. 289-300. The Chinese French-speaking literature, in two decades, has gained a higher visibility through media success and an institutional recognition. It calls for investigations into a past somewhat obscured by history. Tcheng Ki-tong (Chen Jitong1852-1907), diplomat and man of letters of the late Qing Dynasty, is as such an iconic figure: through his writings and his diverse production, he shows an ambiguous rhetoric that oscillates between the mythologizing of China and an universalist utopia excluding balance of power. The lessons which can be drawn from this peculiar position will help us better understand today’s issues for this field of study in perpetual renewal.
