À la fois objets privés et publics, ils sont destinés à l’appréciation des autres, même s’ils participent de l’intimité dans un monde où il importe d’attirer l’œil avec un signifiant socialement porteur. Ils incarnent une signature de soi sur la peau. À l’inverse, pour d’autres qui ne se reconnaissent pas dans une peau les enfermant dans une identité intolérable, les scarifications sont alors une biffure de soi.
520			_aPiercings and tattoos are forms of embellishment of the body. They are chosen for their beauty, for the way they highlight a face or a body, for their touch of originality. Private and public objects at the same time, they are offered to public appreciation, even though they reveal some intimacy in a world where it is important to attract attention with something socially meaningful. They are the signature of the self on one’s skin. On the other hand, for those who cannot recognize themselves in a skin that they feel imprisons them in an insufferable identity, scarification is more like a striking out of the self.
