520			_aÀ partir de septembre 2004, dans les établissements publics français d’enseignement primaire et secondaire, la loi autorise aux élèves le port de signes religieux discrets et leur interdit ceux manifestant ostensiblement une appartenance confessionnelle. Comment, dès lors, les agents de l’éducation nationale distinguent-ils le discret de l’ostensible, l’autorisé de l’interdit, dans leur mise en application quotidienne de ce nouveau cadre législatif ? L’objectif de l’article est d’identifier les critères normatifs mobilisés et produits par les agents pour procéder à l’évaluation de l’expression vestimentaire et religieuse des élèves. L’observation d’une proximité pratique entre la catégorie de signe religieux et celle de signe d’appartenance communautaire permet notamment d’interroger la nature de ce qui est évalué.
520			_aSince September 2004, the law allows pupils to wear inconspicuous religious symbols, and prohibits conspicuous religious symbols within the French public primary and secondary school system. How agents working inside the school system are then distinguishing between conspicuous or inconspicuous, the allowed from the forbidden, in their daily enforcement of the law. The aim of this article is to identify the criteria created and mobilised by these agents to evaluate the pupils’ dress codes and the pupils’ religious expression. The investigation shows a clear practical proximity between two categories of belongings, the one of religious symbols and the one regarding community affiliation, and enables us to question the very nature of what is being evaluated by the agents.
