| 520 | _aAprès l’abolition de l’esclavage dans les colonies françaises des Antilles en 1848, les usages que les esclaves émancipés, aussi appelés par l’administration « nouveaux libres » ou « nouveaux citoyens », firent de leurs tout premiers droits civils font apparaître une dimension à la fois sociale et éthique de la citoyenneté. D’abord et avant tout au fondement du lien social, celle-ci fut un statut permettant à la fois de protéger l’individu et ses enfants, et d’inscrire l’identité de tous les membres du groupe familial dans le tissu social de manière pérenne et stable. À ce titre, la citoyenneté fut le support de la reconnaissance de l’existence civile et sociale des individus en tant qu’ils sont essentiellement porteurs de droits, c’est-à-dire en tant que personne humaine placée sous la protection des lois. | ||

First and foremost at the foundations of the social link, citizenship was a status providing protection to the individuals and their descendants so that the identity of all members of the family was sustainably grounded in the social body. In this sense, citizenship stood as a support for the recognition of the social and civil existence of the individuals, who were considered by essence as holders of substantial rights. In other words, citizenship implied that human dignity was to be protected by the law. | ||
