Walras et Pareto revendiquent tous deux la pertinence des mathématiques pour faire progresser la science économique, mais leur interprétation épistémologique du rôle des mathématiques en économie est radicalement différente, voire contradictoire. L’article montre que les mathématiques sont articulées à une forme de déterminisme chez Walras, tandis qu’elles permettent la liberté individuelle chez Pareto. Cette opposition entre liberté et déterminisme est rattachée à celle qui distingue les mathématiques comme langage de la Nature (chez Walras) aux mathématiques comme outil au service de la science (chez Pareto). | ||

Both consider mathematics as relevant in economics, but their epistemological interpretation of it is different, and sometimes even contradictory. The paper shows that mathematics are linked to a form of determinism in Walras, whereas they are a tool to promote individual freedom in Pareto.
