| 520 | _aAu cours du xixe siècle, les drames shakespeariens sont joués sur de multiples scènes. Adaptés, remodelés selon les contraintes des différents théâtres, ils se trouvent au cœur des controverses sur la mise en scène. Bouleversant les catégories dramatiques et offrant de nouvelles possibilités de jeu, ils nourrissent la réflexion des critiques et metteurs en scène, mais c’est aussi l’histoire de ce théâtre, originellement joué sans décors, qui les amène à s’interroger sur ce qui fonde l’illusion dramatique. Les moyens matériels déployés de plus en plus massivement au xixe siècle ne sont-ils pas un obstacle à l’illusion ? À un théâtre visuel, certains opposent un théâtre de la fantaisie, faisant appel à l’imagination des spectateurs. Dans ce contexte, la « symphonie dramatique » Roméo et Juliette de Berlioz peut être vue comme un moyen de renouer avec les principes fondamentaux de l’esthétique élisabéthaine. | ||
| 520 | _aDuring the xixth century, Shakespeare’s tragedies were performed on many a stage. As they had to be adapted and even modified to fit in with the constraints of the various playhouses, they found themselves entangled in the disputes over stage direction. Dramatic categories were then turned upside down while new performing possibilities were arising, which gave critics and directors food for thought and brought them to ponder over the roots of dramatic illusion, as this theatre was originally played without any scenery : were not the material means used more and more extensively during the xixth century a hindrance to illusion ? Some of them opposed visual to fantasy theatre, the latter calling for the audience’s imagination. In that context, Berlioz’s dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet can be considered as a means to revive the grass roots of Elizabethan aesthetics. | ||
