Mais les emplois de πένομαι, comme le peu d’associations avec l’idée du travail, infirment cette étymologie. Le sens d’origine est en fait celui de l’occupation, sens confirmé par l’absence politique du pauvre, dû au manque de temps libre qui l’empêche de se consacrer aux affaires de la cité.

But the usages of πένομαι, involving few links with the idea of work, do not support this etymology. The original sense is that of « being busy », a sense confirmed by the failure of the poor man to take part in politics, because of the lack of free time for the affairs of the city.
