Peu de voix s’élèvent alors en Grande-Bretagne pour défendre une France qui, jugée belliqueuse et agitée, semble fidèle à son image. Pourtant, au gré des défaites et des humiliations, les Britanniques se découvrent plein de compassion pour les Français ; le siège de Paris puis les exigences de la Prusse lors des conditions de paix finissent par retourner une opinion britannique qui condamne vivement l’annexion de l’Alsace-Lorraine. La guerre de 1870 amène ainsi les Britanniques à s’interroger sur les mutations continentales et à faire évoluer le regard qu’ils portaient sur la France depuis des décennies. | ||
