520 _aThe exponential growth of digital technology raises many questions, from invasive surveillance to environmental impact. Its energy requirements are growing, in contrast to many other sectors which have begun to decline. This is an exception in the energy transition effort, but the strong growth of digital technology is set to continue, despite the countless challenges it poses. Environmental degradation has two major consequences: the sudden rise in both the complexity that human societies have to deal with and the risk of confrontation. The development of cyberspace is a response to the first challenge. But the interconnection of all players is leading to the militarization of society as a whole. The explosive growth of digital technology is a response to the growing need for security, as is the development of renewable energies to reduce increasingly fragile dependencies, two sectors dominated by China and the United States.
