520			_aThis article presents the authors’ reflections on the new perspectives that the concept of ‘constructive consumption’ brings to the analysis of the processes of ‘technical democracy’. The history of technology proposed here seeks to interrogate the narration and self-narration of technical narratives, past and present, while at the same time exploring the macro/micro politics, meaning and impact of technologies as practiced in and between spaces considered then or now as political or cultural units. The contrasting histories of the adaptation of two cooking appliances, the pressure-cooker and the microwave, to the expectations of the French public, viewed in the context of the history of the Arts Ménagers movement, offer an opportunity to explore the subtleties of constructive consumption and to feed the debate on technical democracy.
