520 _aThis article examines the links between death, witchcraft, and the phenomena of trance/possession in contemporary Ivorian society. Manifestations of trance/possession have always been associated with the presence of a spirit or djinn taking possession of a body to transmit a message from the beyond, in other words, from the ancestors. Whether we are talking about death, especially when it occurs violently and unexpectedly, or trance, biological or medical explanations are not able to give them meaning. We will begin by examining the place of death and witchcraft in Ivorian society, and then, through the story of Malimouna, whom we met as part of our research into trance/possession, we will see how trance, possession, and death are intertwined in the singularity of her story.
