520 _aThis paper describes the emergence of geographical issues '” related to other social sciences '” on heritage. Even though the spatial dimension of the construction of heritage has been underlined since the 1980's, geographers, unlike historians, urban planners, ethnologists, sociologists... , have not precociously and notably been involved in this research field. A transdisciplinary topic par excellence, the concept of heritage testifies to the relatively recent '” and not yet fully held '” integration of geography into social sciences. This paper aims at clarifying the geographical approach to heritage. We identify three major points of view : the first one focuses on the position of heritage in land planning and development, the second gives evidence to the role of heritage in the construction of identities, and the third analyses the relationships of the various actors and their conflicts on the concept of heritage and its implementation. These last two approaches appear to be the most stimulating for geographers, analysing heritage as one of the parameters of the construction of social groups in its spatial dimension and as an asset for spatial appropriation.
