520 _aThe bibliography on the history of the Second World War in Normandy, consisting of more than 3,500 works, is largely dominated by the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy. Consequently, the history of Upper Normandy, from the German occupation to its liberation, is not well documented. During the immediate post-war years, throughout France—Normandy was no exception—, witnesses published their war memories in humble leaflets. Paradoxically, while little new work was published, the Cold War saw the release of bestsellers that lastingly inscribed the “myth” of June 6, 1944, in the collective imaginary. From the 1980s onward, the ten-year anniversaries of the D-Day landings were marked by new publications, reaching a peak on the fiftieth anniversary, which saw an exponential increase. Since then, works have become more diverse, in line with the revived interest in France. New forms and genres are now on offer, attracting new audiences through the use of a very rich iconography. At the same time, thanks to the opening of archives, parts of the history of the années noires were brought to light: the behavior of the Normans in the face of the occupying forces and their experiences during the military confrontations were the subject of numerous publications.
