245 0 0 _aDeforestation in the Western Sierra Madre (Mexico) Analyzed with a Geographical Information System

520 _aThe central area of Western Sierra Madre in Mexico was chosen as a case study to demonstrate a methodological approach, using a geographical information system developed for the state of Veracruz, in order to understand the process of deforestation.Logging operations carried out by the main forestry associations are identified and their principal characteristics noted and quantified using a diachronic study of various maps and satellite images over the period 1970 to 1995. These transformations are then connected to the land slopes and the bio-climates, in order to know the use made of the cleared forest land.Interpreting these mechanisms calls for a comparison between this spatialised information and census or production data. This article successively presents the effects of demographie growth, domestic and industrial use of timber, as well as an index assessing the anthropic threat to timber stocks. It also offers a regional scheme of the deforestation mechanism, ranking the municipalities according to their function.
