520			_aThis article explores the role of the state border in the unleashing of the Great Terror of 1937–8 in the USSR. Focusing on the Finnish border and using a vast body of archival sources, it explores the gradual intensification of security measures in the border regions of Soviet Karelia, where a large share of the Finnish-speaking population and the proximity of a perceived aggressor state became the justification for the use of violence in the state’s effort to provide for national security. I argue that the Soviet border regions, and especially Soviet Karelia, became one of the testing grounds for the large-scale use of violence as a form of governance of Soviet society.
520			_aCet article étudie le rôle de la frontière d’État dans le déchaînement de la Grande Terreur de 1937-1938 en URSS. En se concentrant sur la frontière avec la Finlande et en utilisant un vaste corpus de sources, il explore l’intensification graduelle des mesures de sécurité dans les zones frontalières de la Carélie soviétique, où une forte proportion de fennophones et la proximité d’un État perçu comme un agresseur potentiel servirent de justification à l’usage de la violence dans le cadre des efforts de l’État pour assurer la sécurité de la Nation. Je soutiens l’idée que les régions frontalières de l’URSS, et tout spécialement la Carélie soviétique, servirent de test pour utiliser la violence à plus large échelle en tant que mode de gouvernance de la société soviétique.
