245 0 0 _aThe Gift and the “foutaise”. A Study of Songs during the Electoral Campaign of November 2012 in Jàana Villages (Burkina Faso)

520 _a‪This article examines songs delivered during CDP’s meetings in jàana villages for the electoral campaign of 2012. These songs question, from different perspectives, the relation of gift by situating simultaneously singers and candidates as the giver and the recipient. If they were songs of praise, they also disguised calls for money that the candidates had to satisfy. Especially, these songs show how “la foutaise” (“e bebieri”) is entrenched in the gift and reveals a power struggle. Though, “la foutaise” highlights the history of the compaorist regime until its fall from jàana villages. It also expresses the inherent uncertainty in the act of giving, whether a song or money is given, and finally leads to analyze power in geographical terms.‪
