520 _aThe 1983 study of the behavior of the Vacances en France exhibition visitors conducted by Eliseo Verón and Marine Levasseur helped structure the emerging research on exhibitions. Their study differed from those that limited themselves to the analysis of the device and from those that simply conducted an empirical observation of the visitors. They articulated in a single conceptual framework the exhibition creators’ intention and the visitors’ appropriation strategies, the exhibition’s device acting as an intermediary between the two in the medium-term. Thus, the visitors’ behavior can be interpreted as the outcome of a negotiation between the properties of the proposed discourse and the appropriation strategies. In short, the visit to the exhibition is a moment of interaction between these two frames of discourse.
