520			_aCritical attempts to assign reading an essential role in the construction of meaning have often ignored the materiality of texts and erased the social and historical determinations of the act of reading. If readings cannot be deduced from texts or books, they are nevertheless situated within a set of conditions of possibility defined by writing strategies, the materiality of writings and the expectations of interpretive communities. Understanding how, in different times and places, for diverse genres and audiences, restricted freedoms and transgressed constraints intersect is the task that brings together historians of texts, books, and readings.
