520 | _aThe Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) and Dieciocho (18) are not only by far the most dangerous and worrying of all youth gangs, but also the most fascinating. The Mara functions as a family or mother figure for all those children in Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua or Mexico whose cries fall on deaf ears. Interviews with gang members carried out as part of an anthropologically based research project in 2008 shed light on the fact that the social bond uniting members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang is rooted in violence, expressed through differing forms of attacks upon the gang members’ own bodies and those of others. | ||
