| 520 | _aObjective: Analyze the causes of hospital mortality in a sample of cirrhotic patients. Study design: Retrospective study. Materials and methods: Analyze the files of cirrhotic patients who died during hospitalization in the gastroenterology department during the period from January 2017 to July 2019. Results: A total of 125 cirrhotic patients were hospitalized during the analysis period. Twelve deaths were recorded for a hospital mortality rate of 9.6%. The causes of death were, in descending order, as follows: digestive hemorrhage, severe sepsis on ascites fluid infection, hepatic encephalopathy, fulminant hepatocellular insufficiency, and pulmonary embolism. The cause of death was not known in 25% of cases. Conclusion: Our study suggests that patients arrive at the hospital at a complicated stage of the disease, with the main causes of death being gastrointestinal bleeding and ascites fluid infection, which underlines the importance of early management of these deadly complications. | ||
