520 _aBased on an analysis of two corpora – Psalms 42–43 and a collective reading of Romans 5,2b-5 by people experiencing poverty – this article explores the experience of hope when it is lived “from the depths of the depths.” Far from being an abstraction or a purely eschatological virtue, hope is revealed here as an inner struggle, an act of resistance, an emotional experience marked by tears, questions, eclipses, but also surges of faith. Listening to the very poor sheds light on a paschal theology of hope: processual and fragile, nourished by the faithful presence of God in the midst of trial and by a proud act of believing, even in the heart of despair.
