520 _aThe Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) has gained recognition as a model for addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges through innovative and sustainable practices. However, empirical research on the practical implementation of SSE principles, particularly regarding governance and sustainability, remains limited. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining five SSE organizations in Mainland and Insular Portugal (Madeira). It explores how these organizations implement governance models rooted in democratic participation, stakeholder engagement, and digital transformation to foster innovation and sustainability. Through qualitative case studies, the research identifies key strategies that contribute to financial sustainability, participatory governance, and the integration of ecological initiatives. The findings highlight the importance of public policies and supportive institutional frameworks in promoting sustainable innovation within SSE. The study concludes by offering insights into the adaptability and resilience of SSE organizations and their contributions to sustainable development. It also provides practical recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to enhance SSE’s role in addressing global challenges.JEL Codes: B520, L310, O350.
