245 0 0 _aSocial Categories in a Traditional Rural Society (Trizac, Haute-Auvergne, Eighteenth Century): Added Value of Multicriteria Analysis and Automatic Classification

520 _a‪Single-criteria and multi-criteria analyses (PCA) are conducted on survey data from a rural parish. Social groups are identified via hierarchical classification (AHP) on a broader basis than farming income alone, without setting predetermined threshold values between groups. Social rank is determined by attributes such as ownership of pastureland or access to the commons. Socio spatial differences between the main parish and smaller village add their effects to those of homogamy. Analysis of domesticity based on a later census confirms the stability of the social hierarchy over three generations. Last, we show how the classification can be used to choose relevant examples in support of an argument.‪
