520 _aThe sample of our study contains 383 mother-child pairs, of which 147 are pairs of mothers and children with a feeding disorder and 236 are pairs of mothers and children with normal development. All mother-child dyads were observed in twenty-minute video-recordings during a meal. A subgroup of mothers (N = 71), selected at random from the total clinical sample, and paired with a control group were given self-reporting instruments for the evaluation of their psychological symptom status. Analysis of variance showed that the dyads of the feeding disorder group present interactional dysfunctional patterns. In addition, the results pointed out a significant association between the symptomatic state of the mother (dysfunctional eating attitudes, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, psychoticism) and the mealtime dysfunctional mother-child interactions. These results suggest the role of the intergenerational transmission of maternal psychopathology and confirm the importance, in the clinical assessment of early feeding disorders, of monitoring the quality of the mother-child relational patterns, in order to formulate strategies for targeted and effective intervention.
