520 _a“Latin America” is the most common expression used to define the region. However, the term has a Eurocentric origin, dating back less than two centuries to designate regions colonized by so-called “Latin” nations and differentiated from Anglo-Saxon America, thus excluding the history of native peoples and Afro-descendant populations. While decolonial perspectives and a number of indigenous organizations now promote the appellation “Abya Yala”, it seems necessary to us to use, at the very least, the plural to underline the diversity of the Latin Americas, or even to opt for a more inclusive term by speaking, for example, of “the Indo-Afro-Latin Americas and Caribbean”.
