520			_aPierre Gire was a remarkable figure at Lyon Catholic University, both intellectually and quite simply on a human level. A diocesan priest and heir to the Second Vatican Council, with a questioning spirit and a commitment to dialogue with culture and the contemporary world, this teacher-researcher drew on the philosophical tradition to offer all his interlocutors a path of truth oriented toward the Absolute. He explored four lines of thought in his search for faith’s intelligibility : through his anthropological grounding and the breadth of his work, he engaged critically with the culture of his time ; he affirmed philosophy’s role as a mediator and source of critical inquiry among various forms of knowledge ; this led him to develop a metaphysical reflection open to the search for what is essential in every human life – all sustained by the deep desire that unified both his work and his personal life : the desire for Life in God as a spiritual and mystical journey sought by every mind in search of the Absolute. 520			_aPierre Gire fut une figure remarquable de l’Université catholique de Lyon, tant sur le plan intellectuel que tout simplement humain. Prêtre diocésain, héritier du Concile Vatican II, dans un esprit toujours questionnant et dans sa volonté de dialogue avec la culture et le monde contemporain, c’est grâce à la tradition philosophique que l’enseignant-chercheur a offert à tous ses interlocuteurs un chemin de vérité orienté vers l’Absolu. Il a su explorer quatre perspectives de pensée à partir de sa recherche d’intelligibilité de la foi : par son ancrage anthropologique et par la dimension de son travail, il a interrogé la culture de son temps ; il a su affirmer le rôle de la philosophie dans sa fonction de médiation et d’interrogation critique au sein des différents types de savoirs ; ce qui l’a conduit à proposer une réflexion métaphysique ouverte à la recherche de ce qui est essentiel dans toute vie humaine, tout cela sous-tendu par le désir le plus profond qui unifiait à la fois son œuvre et son existence personnelle, le désir de la Vie en Dieu comme voyage à la fois spirituel et mystique auquel aspire tout esprit en quête d’Absolu.
