520 _aThe murder in France of the French teacher Samuel Paty on 16 October 2020 sent shockwaves around the world, reflecting the tragic consequences of social and identity-based polarisation in education. At the same time, in Quebec, a scandal erupted in the media following the suspension of an academic from Ottawa (Canada), Verushka Lieutenant-Duval, who uttered the ‘n-word’ in one of her art history lectures on the concept of subversive resignification. Drawing on notions of proof (Boltanski & Thévenot 1991) and value registers (Heinich 2017), the Article examines how the Lieutenant-Duval affair catalysed a social disagreement that became a public affair pitting the fields of ethics and epistemics against each other, helping to redefine the very reality of the academic world, as well as shedding light on the contemporary relationship to the construction of truth and facts.
